Looking for New Members!

With sadly Dion hiatus and our Tracker of News missing, we're in desperate need of some members!

As such, we are looking for new official members (>+2) to officially help out with the making of this weekly Zine.

Tracker of News (1+): someone who will check the different output of IF releases and events, and compile the list for the weekly release, incl in the database. The database already include 500+ projects, incl most of the currently active ones. Knowledge of tags to follow or websites to check is a plus. Keeping up with VN news would be amazing.

Social Media Poster (1): someone who will post announcements (new issue, next interview, other) on our different accounts (X, Mastodon, Bluesky, Itch Devlogs, CoG Forum). Potentially will need to interact with other users tagging/replying to us on those platforms.

From past experience, we expect a couple of hours per week to complete either the task. You won't be assigned any other duties than the one you signed-up for (unless you want to contribute more).

A Discord username is preferred for communication.

Lately, there's been an uptick in unusual reports. The mysterious 'the air beat the crap out of me' claims have risen by 700%. In the last 6 months. Some reported seeing a smile or green light. Others said they heard a child like laugh right before they were knocked out. By all accounts, this one seemed impossible. Which is why J'onn J'onzz was called in.

He'd called back all the witnesses from the latest month to re interview them since the regular police didn't have the same 'advanced' techniques he had. It was as he thought. The police had ignored these cases because they were happening during active crimes like muggings or barbrawls. Later, it was gang members. 'Why should we stop something if it's making our job easier. But in the past 2 weeks, the m.o. has changed. It started attacking people in their homes. The reports all say it was unprovoked, but J'ohn had a feeling it wasn't.

During the interviews, he watched their memories play out. Most of them were consistent. They were at home and got beat up by nothing. Some did see the same sharp toothed smile, sometimes it was in the air, sometimes it was on whoever was with them. But there was one major detaileach of them conveniently forgot to mention. These people weren't innocent like most of them had insisted. They had each been in the midst of hitting their spouses or children.

All except the latest one. Gerald Crane.

Who had been giving his son some sort of gas so he could have specific blood samples. Which, as J'onn knows better than most, is exactly how you get a supervillain.

This is deffinetly a person. With intentions and motives. And they're escalating.

"Hay Johnny, how's the ghost case?" Calls one of the uniformed officers in the bullpen. "Or is it aliens?" He continues to mock to the delight of other officers. J'onn doesn't even look up. Their approval is worth nothing. "Hey, maybe it's some African mumbo jumbo." Another one adds.

"That's enough." A third voice interrupts. This time, J'onn bothers to look away from his files. "Shut up, Gordon." "Yeah this doesn't concern you." They both demand. "Does it concern my fists out back?" He threatened. The other two backed down after that, and reading their minds, J'onn learned that this new recruit had a history of being unbeatable in a fist fight.

How crass.

The young man eagerly sat down in front of him. "Hi, i was assigned to help you with your case. I'm James Gordon, but everyone calls me Jim. " He said with an outstretched hand. J'onn had seen this before. Humans like to touch hands when they greet. He hesitantly mimicks the others' actions, who grabs it firmly and shakes. "I heard you get all whe weirdest cases. One day, that's gonna be me. I intend to use this opportunity to learn everything I can." He says with a genuine smile on his face. Those have been rare since coming to Gotham. And having someone who's familiar with this city could be very useful. But... J'onn solves cases by reading minds. How's he supposed to explain that?

He's learned a lot in the last 6 months. For starters, he can now distinguish which emotion is which. First, he could just follow the sudden just that comes with unexpected fear. That one's very easy to find. Then he got it to specifically the fear of a known but unexpected threat. But after a while, the fear became stale. It just didn't fill him up like before.

Not like dread. Now, dread was a different story. Knowing you're not safe even in your own home. Knowing you can't ask for help. Knowing you can't fight back. It was enough to make his mouth water.

But this last one. It didn't feed him like the others did. The boy was terrified. But something about it didn't feel right. Like it was artificial or something. The base ment lab, too. It didn't feel right. Or rather, it felt too right? So much weird glowing science equipment. It felt, kinda,

For the first time since he came to this city, he actually felt tired? Safe? No. This wasn't safety. But it was a belonging.

Something in the back of his mind kept nagging at him. Everywhere he looked had more familiar objects. Vials of green goo flash in his head, but it's not the same ones he sees in this room. The large industrial steel door entrance prompted pictures of a rounder steel arch. "No! Stop it!" A pair of leather gloves gets replaced with one's made of metal. They hurt. A row of syringes hang on a wall. "Please, dad, stop!" He cried desperately. "Please."

"Why are you in my dads lab?" A reserved yet stern voice asks.

He looks up through teary eyes and beholds the blurry figure in the stairs.

"Jazz?"

He wipes his eyes and takes a better look. A young boy, no older than 13, with long, messy red hair, stands in the stairs. Staring directly at him.

"My name's Johnny. Who are you?" He still wastes no time with pleasantries.

Good question. The last few months have at least proven one thing. He's definitely real. He exists.

"I don't know." Says the teenager sitting hunched over on the floor.

"Did my dad bring you here? Is that why you broke his jaw and arm and pushed him down the stairs from the second floor and then dragged him to the basement door and pushed him down these stairs?"

"I'm sorry you saw that." He remorses

"I didn't see it, I had to tell it over and over to the doctors, nurses, police, detectives, lawyer, insurance people, and those weirdos in the white suits."

As much as it is helpful for me, as a modern person, to assign my ocs modern labels in my little meta-text, i really do enjoy exploring what their gender and sexuality would have looked like in the context of the Societies they lived in, even (and especially!) with the Neath itself being more accepting!!!

Elias is never going to pass, even by modern day standards, but of course, they have a role to live up to and fit in with, and that already kind of superceeds their gender. Being fat leads to feminization and de-masculination in society, but being a wheelchair user leads to total de-gendering anyways. They're intersex, and always have been, but because surgeries were so dangerous back then on the Surface, they never had to face anything 'corrective', and when they got to the neath they were able to get a small surgery explicitly for the purpose of making penetrative sex more comfortable, something that *they* wanted. They still have their soft facial hair, but are bearded ladies still seen in carnivals whenever there's Rubberies around? Elias accepts both the Masculine and Feminine aspects of themself, and though they lean heavily into the Feminine, they don't deny the Masculine, and they enjoy themself quite a lot! Their voice is low for a woman, yet high for a man. But is any of that taken into account when they are the Regent? Their feminity is more noticeable and prominent among the Guild in Jericho, as Gondoliers (and thus: Gonfaloniere) has always been the role of a man. So here they are, holding a Maculine role, while presenting very feminely. This isn't even getting into their relationship to 'love', where they don't feel romantic attraction as others do, but their role as Regent puts heavy pressure on that, and how they're expected to marry those of a certain birth status, and nothing less. And then their sexuality being very heavily kink based!!!

Marigold is the very picture of feminity, being a Fashion Plate Model, and wearing their hair and dressing how they do, but they do not identify as a woman. This image also decays, unable to maintain their sense of self through their abuse. Their romantic and sexual reels are also tied into pain, (kink or abuse) and extremely targeted and intense.

Thursday wouldn't read as particularly butch or masculine nowadays, but back in the victorian era they're the pinacle of masculinity for a woman!!! Bifurcated cycling skirt, and masculine tailoring tastes for their jacket and vest? Yes they still wear a corset, but listen they need the bust support. Taking active roles in things as well!

Queue helps keep your Pillowfort active by staggering posts over a period of hours or days. Just go to your Settings page to set your queue interval and time period.

How to add a post to your queue: 

While creating a new post or editing a draft, click on the clock icon to the right of the “Publish” button and choose “Queue.” Then click “Queue” when you’re ready to submit the post.

Schedule assigns a post a specific publishing time in the future (based on your timezone you’ve selected in Account Settings). How to schedule a post: 

While creating a new post or editing a draft, click on the clock icon to the right of “Publish” and choose “Schedule.” Enter the time you wish to publish your post, click on “Submit” and then click “Schedule.” 

How to review your queued & scheduled posts: 

On the web, your Queue is available in the user sidebar located on the left side of the screen underneath “Posts.” (On mobile devices, click on the three line icon located on the upper left of your screen to access your user sidebar.)

Note: the “Queue” button will only display if you have one or more queued or scheduled posts.

A CAVEAT: It is not currently possible to queue or schedule posts to Communities. We do intend to add this feature in the future, but during development it was determined that enabling queueing & scheduling to Communities would require additional workflow and use case requirements that would extend development time when this project has already been delayed, and so it was decided to release queue & scheduling for blogs only at the present time. We will add the ability to queue & schedule to Communities soon after the Pillowfort PWA (our next major development project) is complete.

i've been receiving a few replies on the topic so i'll make a post about it again. i've jumped back into dq10! yes, the japan-only mmo! yes, you can play it too!

there's a free trial with the base game and the first expansion (version 1 and 2) albeit with some restrictions like a level limit, not being able to use the nearby chat (there are a few quests this makes uncompletable but it's not a big deal), and not being able to use the traveller's bazaar to buy and sell with other players.

i'm not affiliated with anyone who makes any tools or guides and don't know them. it's a little outdated but there's a bunch of information over at https://dqxabbey.com/ that's take you through making a japanese square enix account, activating the free trial, and installing the game. then using a translated version of the launcher and config program and installing dqx clarity which replaces story text and certain terms like monster names with fan translated versions, and runs the rest of the text through a machine translation and injects it into the game. if you really like it, they also have guides for buying the game, buying a subscription, and buying from the dq10 shop. i own the game myself now and can help answer questions about that.

bear in mind: the game kicks you out if you try to connect from outside japan. several years ago they started allowing connections from the us (maybe all of north america? idk) since western fans were finding ways to play anyway. however, i live in the uk so i still get kicked so i have to use a vpn. dqx abbey mentions proton vpn which has a free version so i use that sometimes. proton vpn used to let you at least choose from the free servers. it now auto-assigns one, you can still click 'change server' a few times until you get one in japan or the us but it will time you out if you do it too many times. you may have to sort out another vpn for yourself.

How come we are so fucked: the decline of modern democracy

The second law of thermodynamics states that the level of disorder in any closed system cannot decrease. Unless there's some external influence, things can only get more and more messy.  The earth is not, by any mean, a close system, and therefore neither the biosphere nor human activities are in fact directly governed by the second law in the strict sense. Nevertheless, we can still formulate a version for this law of nature that is applicable to human societies: without a focused intervention everything shall get worse.

A democratic government is a synthetic thing. It was made; it didn't just evolve. The first system for a modern democratic rule was set up in the US of A during the late eighteenth century by its founding fathers. It was based on ideas by liberal European thinkers such as Locke, Rousseau and Montesquieu‏. Although the US was hardly a true democracy then – it legalized slavery and assigned voting rights to white men only – the system it procured still served as a template for all modern democracies hence: parliament, government and head of state (and potentially other public positions) elected by the general public according to the majority rule.

There is no perfect system of government. The US Americans, for instance, tried to construct a fair system, but it was rather naïve and it still contained many loopholes that could be exploited by some groups to increase their own political power on the expanse of other groups. Moreover, when certain people become powerful due to flaws in the system, they use this power to enlarge end deepen these advantageous defects, gaining even more power, and that allows them to increase yet again the inherent unfairness. This dynamic is common to all forms of government, not just in the US: barring a dramatic disruption or, alternatively, a continuous effort to counter decay, the imbalance and unfairness can only increase over time. It's the "second law" of sociodynamics.

Indeed, dramatic disruptions can occur. The US had a civil war. Germany fell into fascism and then was defeated and conquered in a world war. However, revolutions and total wars are rare, unpredictable and bloody. The only practical way to preserve a fair, liberal democracy it to fight for it relentlessly. The problem is, most people fail to understand this fact. They have this false vision of a democratic system as a stable structure, protected by its constitution and by its institutions. And because they don't take into account the second law of sociodynamics, they become passive subjects of the deteriorating system, ignorant with respect to the fundamental reasons all this is happening around them.

One of the resulting misconceptions is to regard conservative politics as representing just another ideological stance. In fact, those who lead the fight to conserve a faulty system are typically the ones who benefit mostly by it. And they have a built-in advantage, exactly because of these faults. It’s a positive-feedback vicious circle – the powerful have the power to preserve and magnify their power. The fact that they operate within a supposedly fair democratic system only help to obfuscate the actual dynamic behind the scene.

But it doesn't end here. There's another factor that make matters much worse than they could have been. The masterminds of modern democracy made a fatal mistake in their design. They stipulated that political power is allocated strictly based on majority. And this, as it turned out, is profoundly destructive.

Democratic governments profess to represent a "social contract", empowering it to rule for the benefit of the society as a whole. However, in effect, they frequently gain control that is only based on a small majority. For example, a governing coalition may have gained a very narrow majority of just 51% of the votes but obtained practically all the political power. Moreover, in a heterogeneous society, where political and ideological affiliations are rooted in rigid ethnical, religious or socio-economical divisions, the same parties can gain the electoral upper-hand repeatedly in every election. Constituents of minority groups, large or small, are being incessantly deprived of any significant influence on the national policy.

Minority groups suppression has far-reaching consequences. It undermines the very essence of the social contract as it leaves many citizens politically powerless. Consequently, the state can ignore their interests with impunity, make them outcasts, and, in extreme cases, even persecute them under the guise of a lawful democratic rule.

The "winner takes it all" scheme generates a constant socio-political tension, hatred between rival political tribes and deep frustration that often leads to violence. Such social disintegration can be observed in democratic countries all over the world. Politics became a zero-sum game, and it's fucking up our societies and, eventually, our lives.

But what can be done? Is there any other fair way to determine policy without resorting to the who-got-more-skulls arm wrestling? Is there a way to drive society toward consensus rather than division? Is there a way to disrupt the vicious circle of the powerful using their power to gain more power?

Well, as a matter of fact, there is! I intend to elaborate about it in future posts. Meanwhile, it may be illuminating to consider the method employed in the NBA draft, and how it prevents specific teams from perpetuating their hegemony.

This Blog's Purpose

This blog is going to serve as two things: a compendium of all knowledge relating to Relan, a planet of my own design with its own history, religions, sciences, magics, and more, as well as a collection of stories about the people living on Relan. Some quick things to cover about Relan, for those interested:

I am 100% okay with OCs. If someone likes my world enough to make a character to throw into it, that is, to me, the ultimate compliment.

If you need/want help integrating your OCs into Relan, I am absolutely down to help with all the resources I have on the world.

Don't know if a species exists on Relan? Well, every single animal species on Earth exists on Relan, and every mythical being exists as well in some form or another, there's even a few internet-designed species and some entirely original species of my own design! So have fun with it!

Relan is a fantasy world. Ancient times have high fantasy themes and forms, modern times have modern fantasy themes and forms, and future eras have a distinctly science-fiction feel with a hint of magic to them. As such, my stories will usually have these themes and/or forms!

The informant accused of fabricating a story about President Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden taking $5 million each in bribes allegedly had high-level Russian intelligence contacts, according to newly filed court documents.

In the filing, Special Counsel David Weiss reveals that after his arrest last week, Alexander Smirnov told the FBI "that officials with Russian intelligence were involved in passing a story" about Hunter Biden.

Prosecutors argued in their filing Smirnov should be held pending trial, with Weiss saying that Smirnov's claims he has active contacts with "multiple foreign intelligence agencies" and had planned to leave the U.S. just two days after his arrival in the U.S. last week "for a months-long, multi-country foreign trip."

However, a judge late Tuesday ordered Smirnov released from custody, under the condition that he surrender his passport, wear an ankle monitor, and be restricted to traveling only to Nevada and to California for court purposes.

In Weiss' filing, he wrote that "foreign intelligence agencies could resettle Smirnov outside the United States if he were released."

Furthermore, "Smirnov's efforts to spread misinformation about a candidate of one of the two major parties in the United States continues," the filing states. "What this shows is that the misinformation he is spreading is not confined to 2020. He is actively peddling new lies that could impact U.S. elections after meeting with Russian intelligence officials in November. In light of that fact there is a serious risk he will flee in order to avoid accountability for his actions."

Smirnov's assigned defense counsel disputed Weiss' claims that Smirnov misled the court's pretrial services officer about his personal wealth.

Attorney David Chesnoff said that when Smirnov met with the officer he was "only asked about his personal assets and not the business account."

His attorney did not directly address the other claims raised by Weiss regarding Smirnov's claimed extensive ties to Russian intelligence or other issues they say present a risk he will flee prosecution.

The developments come as Hunter Biden's team suggested that the informant's alleged fabrications helped tank a plea deal.

Attorneys for Hunter Biden claimed in court filings on Tuesday that a bribery allegation made by the newly indicted ex-FBI informant may have contributed to the demise of their client's plea deal with prosecutors last year.

According to the filings, the lawyers largely base their assertion on the fact that Hunter Biden's deal unraveled around the same time that the Justice Department began scrutinizing the informant's claims of Biden family corruption. In court papers filed Tuesday, Abbe Lowell, an attorney for the president's son, slammed Weiss for allegedly following the informant, Smirnov, "down his rabbit hole of lies."

But it's not clear from court records that the downfall of Hunter Biden's deal was connected in any meaningful way to Smirnov's allegations. And it's not clear that Weiss ever found Smirnov's allegations credible.

Weiss opened his investigation years after senior Justice Department officials determined that Smirnov's allegations were not worth pursuing further. And the investigation came around the same time that Republican lawmakers publicly released an FBI document detailing the informant's allegations, which the Justice Department now says were completely "fabricated."

Specifically, Weiss filed felony false statement and obstruction charges against Smirnov last week for telling his FBI handler in 2020, as Joe Biden was running for the White House, that Biden and his son had accepted $10 million in bribes from a Ukrainian oligarch.

In Weiss' indictment of Smirnov, he noted that in July 2023, investigators pursuing Hunter Biden launched "an investigation of allegations related to" the informant's prior claims – shortly before a July 26, 2023, court hearing where their negotiated plea agreement with Hunter Biden fell apart.

In court papers filed Tuesday, Lowell tried to tie it all to his client's doomed plea deal.

"Having taken Mr. Smirnov's bait of grand, sensational charges, the [plea deal] … that was on the verge of being finalized suddenly became inconvenient for the prosecution, and it reversed course and repudiated those agreements," Lowell wrote. "It now seems clear that the Smirnov allegations infected this case."

Lowell's allegation appeared in filings intended to convince a judge to order the Justice Department to hand over even more government documents related to his client's case.

Investigators spent five years probing Hunter Biden's foreign business deals before reaching a deal last summer that would allow him to plead guilty to misdemeanor tax crimes in exchange for probation. Hunter Biden also would have agreed to a pretrial diversion on a separate gun charge, with the charge being dropped if he adhered to certain terms.

But that deal fell apart under questioning from a federal judge, whose line of questioning about the deal exposed fissures between the two parties, prompting prosecutors to threaten Hunter Biden with additional charges under the Foreign Agents Registration Act.

It was the specter of potential FARA violations that led Lowell to accuse Weiss' team of inappropriately reviewing Smirnov's claim years after the FBI determined them to be incorrect.

Weiss ultimately brought three felony gun-related charges against Hunter Biden in Delaware and additional tax-related charges in California. Hunter Biden has pleaded not guilty to them all.

Meanwhile, in the same filing Tuesday, Lowell pointed out what appears to be an embarrassing gaffe by prosecutors: mistaking sawdust for cocaine. Weiss' office included in a previous filing an image of what he said were lines of cocaine on Hunter Biden's phone around the time that he purchased a firearm.

But according to Lowell, the photo was sent by Hunter Biden's then-psychiatrist and showed not cocaine, but sawdust, which Lowell said, "sounds more like a storyline from one of the 1980s Police Academy comedies than what should be expected in a high-profile prosecution by the U.S. Department of Justice."
